Product Overview

The Flowserve Logix 520MD is a digital valve positioner designed for precise control of pneumatic actuators. It uses a two-wire 4-20mA control signal with HART communication (HART 5, 6, and 7 supported) to convert input signals into pneumatic outputs for both rotary and linear actuators. The positioner combines superior positioning and tuning functions with convenient setup and powerful diagnostic tools.

The 520MD uses a multi-variable gain tuning algorithm that allows large step changes with minimal overshoot while maintaining the resolution to respond to very small step changes. The Auto-tune procedure cycles the actuator to produce a measured response and selects gain values that provide appropriate actuator performance. A gain modifier selector can increase or decrease the calculated gain for optimal performance.

Configuration is handled through easy DIP switch settings for tuning mode and other common settings. For custom requirements, tuning sets can be modified with a handheld or with ValveSight™ software to accommodate a wide range of actuator sizes and types. The unit features a two-stage control design for faster response times and tighter control, with low air consumption.

Common Problems

• No LED blinking: Current is below 3.6 mA or wiring polarity is incorrect. Verify supply current is at least 3.6 mA and check polarity.

• Erratic communications: HART signal issues. Check current source bandwidth is limited to 25Hz. Verify cable length and impedance. Use a compatible intrinsic safety barrier. Use the HART filter (part number 10156843) or a 250Ω resistor with 22μF capacitor.

• Unit does not respond to analog commands: Unit is in digital command mode or a calibration error occurred. Change command mode to analog. Recalibrate the unit.

• Valve position reading not as expected: Position sensor mounting not at 180 degrees, stroke not calibrated, MPC active, or user characterization active. Reposition sensor. Calibrate stroke.

• Position driven fully open or closed, not responding to command: Stroke not calibrated, Hall sensor inner loop not connected, wrong air action set, tubing reversed, or I/P converter issue. Calibrate stroke. Check hardware connections. Verify ATO/ATC settings.

• Friction Calibration Required: No friction calibration performed since factory reset. Perform Friction Calibration using the display menu, handheld, or DTM.

• Partial Stroke Test Scheduled: A PST is due based on user schedule. Initiate the test following internal procedures.

• Position High/Low Limit Alert: Position has reached user-defined limit. Adjust limit value or command signal.
