Product Overview
The Flowserve Logix 520MD is a high-performance digital valve positioner that communicates via HART. It takes a two-wire 4-20mA control signal and provides a proportional pneumatic output to drive a valve actuator. The unit is powered solely by the 4-20mA loop and handles single-acting actuators in both linear and rotary configurations.
The positioner uses a multi-variable gain tuning algorithm that enables large step changes with minimal overshoot while preserving high resolution for very small step changes. An Auto-tune routine cycles the actuator to produce a measured response and automatically selects gain values that optimize actuator performance. A gain modifier selector allows further refinement of the calculated gain. Simple DIP switches manage tuning mode and other common settings, and ValveSight software delivers standard diagnostic functionality.
The design offers fast, easy, and accurate calibration with self-calibration and adjustable gain selection. Steady-state air consumption is low, and the two-stage control design provides faster response times and tighter control. The unit supports HART 5, 6, and 7 and is rated for use in hazardous areas.

Application Industry
The Flowserve Logix 520MD is used in oil and gas, chemical processing, power generation, water treatment, and pharmaceutical industries. Key applications include pipeline and actuator control, reactor valve positioning, turbine bypass automation, flow regulation in plants, and hygienic valve operations. Its certified hazardous area rating makes it suitable for demanding process environments.
Common Problems
No LED blinking: Current is below 3.6 mA or wiring polarity is incorrect. Verify supply current is at least 3.6 mA and check polarity.
Erratic communications: HART signal issues. Check current source bandwidth is limited to 25Hz. Verify cable length and impedance. Use a compatible intrinsic safety barrier.
Unit does not respond to analog commands: Unit is in digital command mode or a calibration error occurred. Change command mode to analog. Recalibrate the unit.
Valve position reading not as expected: Position sensor mounting not at 180 degrees, stroke not calibrated, or MPC active. Reposition sensor. Calibrate stroke.
Position driven fully open or closed: Stroke not calibrated, Hall sensor inner loop not connected, wrong air action set, or tubing reversed. Calibrate stroke. Check hardware connections.
Friction Calibration Required: No friction calibration performed since factory reset. Perform Friction Calibration using the display menu, handheld, or DTM.
Replacement Models
The Flowserve Logix 520MD series is a mature digital positioner platform. For applications requiring additional safety integrity, the Logix 520MD+ variant offers enhanced features. For newer installations, the Logix 3200MD and Logix 3800MD are alternative models within the same product family. For cross-vendor alternatives, verify actuator mounting, travel range, and communication protocol before ordering.
