Product Description

Product Overview

The Neles ND9000 is a microcontroller-based intelligent valve positioner that manages pneumatic actuators with a 4-20 mA loop or fieldbus signal and provides proportional air output for both single- and double-acting configurations. It supports rotary and linear valve types on any control valve actuator, using a contactless position measurement system that removes mechanical wear and simplifies mounting on actuators with VDI/VDE 3845 or IEC 60534-6 interfaces. The local user interface offers language selection and enables fast setup and calibration, and the same hardware can serve linear and rotary valves as well as double- and single-acting actuators, which minimizes spare part inventory. Communication is interchangeable: HART 6 or 7, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, and Profibus PA can be selected by replacing a single board, so the device can be upgraded without replacing the whole positioner. Optional limit switches and a position transmitter (HART only) provide position feedback without extra modules. The ND9000 is certified to SIL 2 by TÜV according to IEC 61508, making it suitable for safety-related loops. Because it is loop-powered and operates with as little as 3.6 mA, it works with existing controllers and electrical barriers. The 1-point calibration function enables hot-swap mounting on valves that are still in process without disturbing the process.

The housing is made from anodized aluminum alloy and polymer composite, with an optional full stainless steel version for corrosive settings. Protection is rated IP66 and NEMA 4X against dust, water, and harsh atmospheres. The standard temperature range is -40°C to +85°C, and an arctic version extends operation down to -53°C. Supply pressure ranges from 0.14 to 0.8 MPa (1.4 to 8 bar). The ND9000 is designed for low energy and air consumption, lowering total cost of ownership. It carries a broad certification portfolio: ATEX, IECEx, INMETRO, cCSAus, CCOE/PESO, KOSHA, GOST R, and NEPSI for intrinsically safe and explosion-proof applications. It is widely used in oil and gas, chemical processing, refining, power generation, water treatment, pulp and paper, and general industrial control. The open architecture supports FDT and EDD integration with major DCS systems, and the device works with both Neles and third-party actuators. Benchmark control performance, advanced diagnostics, and a future-proof modular design make the ND9000 a reliable choice for valve automation, plant efficiency, and predictive maintenance.

Application Industry

  1. Oil and gas processing

  2. Chemical and petrochemical plants

  3. Power generation

  4. Water and wastewater treatment

  5. Pulp and paper mills

  6. Refining and pipeline pressure regulation

  7. Pharmaceutical manufacturing

  8. Mining and metals processing

These industries require accurate valve positioning, reliable communication, and advanced diagnostic capability to maintain production efficiency and safety. The ND9000 is particularly suited for applications where benchmark control performance on rotary and linear valves is important, such as automated flow and pressure control, oil and gas upstream and midstream valve automation, chemical and petrochemical batch and continuous processes, steam and utility systems in power plants, and refining operations. The non-contact position measurement technology prolongs service life and is ideal for both Neles and third-party pneumatic actuators. With HART or fieldbus communication and online valve diagnostics, operators can access valve condition data, performance trends, and diagnostic alerts without entering hazardous areas, improving safety and enabling predictive maintenance.

Common Problems

  1. Positioner does not respond to input signal – check the 4-20 mA loop for continuity, verify that the source can supply at least 3.6 mA, and confirm that the terminal voltage meets the required compliance voltage.

  2. Valve does not stroke with setpoint change – verify pneumatic connections and supply pressure; confirm that the correct input signal is reaching the instrument and that calibration has been completed.

  3. Local display not functioning – check power supply and verify that the terminal connections are secure.

  4. Auto calibration fails to complete – check actuator travel, supply pressure, and that the non-contact position sensor is properly positioned; verify there is no mechanical binding.

  5. Position feedback incorrect – verify the limit switch or position transmitter configuration and recalibrate the positioner using the local interface or DTM/EDD software.

  6. Air leaks or pressure droop – inspect air supply connections, relay, and actuator tubing for leaks; verify supply pressure is between 1.4 and 8 bar and that air quality is adequate.

  7. Valve stuck or solenoid stuck – run online valve diagnostic tests to identify valve assembly friction, actuator spring issues, or shaft problems; review stored diagnostic trends.

  8. Excessive valve assembly friction – perform diagnostic friction analysis and compare against baseline; inspect packing and stem condition; review cycle count and signature data.

  9. Moisture ingress into enclosure – inspect cover seals, cable glands, and terminal box; verify IP66 / NEMA 4X integrity.

  10. Communication intermittent – check loop wiring, shielding, termination, and device address; verify DTM/EDD integration with the control system.
