The Spirax Sarco SP7 Smart Valve Positioner is an electronically configurable instrument designed for precise control of pneumatic linear and rotary actuators that conform to the NAMUR standard. It receives a 4-20 mA DC control signal and converts it into a proportional pneumatic output pressure to drive the valve actuator, guaranteeing an exact proportionality between the valve stroke and the electrical input signal. The SP7-10 version includes a local communication interface (LCI) as standard, and an optional HART communication module enables communication via the 20 mA signal. HART 5 or HART 7 revisions are available to suit different asset management platforms. For fieldbus applications, the SP7-11 supports PROFIBUS PA and the SP7-12 supports FOUNDATION Fieldbus. In addition to the analog setpoint input, the positioner is equipped with a digital input for activating control system functions and a digital output for collective alarms and fault messages. The unit features fully automatic determination of control parameters and adaptation to the positioner, which delivers considerable time savings during commissioning and optimal control behaviour. Its compact, modular construction and excellent cost-performance ratio make it a practical choice for both new installations and retrofit projects.
The positioner housing is a die-cast aluminium case with anti-corrosive paint, suitable for outdoor installation. The air supply range is 1.4 to 6.0 bar (20.3 to 87 psi g), and the air quality must meet ISO 8573-1:2010 Class 3:3:3. Output pressure ranges from 0 to 100% of supply pressure. Actuator stroke coverage is 20 mm to 150 mm for linear actuators and 55° to 90° for rotary actuators. The operating temperature range is -40 to +85°C. The SP7-1* carries ATEX II 2 G Ex ib IIC T6, T4…T1 Gb and IECEx ratings for intrinsically safe applications in hazardous areas. Typical industries include steam and industrial fluid control, chemical and petrochemical processing, food and beverage production, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and general industrial process control. The combination of automatic tuning, digital communication, and hazardous area certification makes the SP7 a dependable choice for precise valve control and plant efficiency.

General industrial process control
These industries require accurate valve positioning, reliable communication, and automatic tuning to maintain process efficiency and safety. The SP7 is particularly suited for steam control applications where precise temperature and pressure regulation are critical. Its NAMUR-compliant mounting makes it compatible with a wide range of Spirax Sarco pneumatic actuators, including the BVA300 rotary actuator and the PN1600, PNS3000, PNS4000, PN9000, and TN2000 series linear actuators. The optional pressure gauge block allows local monitoring of supply and output pressures. With HART or fieldbus communication, operators can access valve condition data and diagnostic alerts remotely, improving safety and enabling predictive maintenance.
Positioner does not respond to input signal – check the 4-20 mA loop for continuity, verify that the source can supply sufficient current, and confirm that the impedance does not exceed 485 ±15 Ω; inspect the air supply pressure and quality.
Valve does not stroke with setpoint change – verify pneumatic connections and supply pressure; confirm that the correct input signal is reaching the instrument and that automatic tuning has completed successfully.
Local display not functioning – check power supply and verify that the terminal connections are secure.
Automatic tuning fails to complete – check actuator stroke is within the range of 20 to 150 mm (linear) or 55° to 90° (rotary), verify supply pressure is between 1.4 and 6.0 bar, and ensure there is no mechanical binding.
Position feedback incorrect – verify the feedback linkage and recalibrate the positioner using the local interface or HART communicator.
Air leaks or pressure droop – inspect air supply connections, relay, and actuator tubing for leaks; verify air quality meets ISO 8573-1:2010 Class 3:3:3.
Valve stuck or solenoid stuck – run diagnostic tests to identify valve assembly friction, actuator spring issues, or shaft problems.
Excessive valve assembly friction – perform diagnostic friction analysis and compare against baseline; inspect packing and stem condition.
Moisture ingress into enclosure – inspect cover seals, cable glands, and terminal box; verify housing integrity and anti-corrosive coating condition.
HART communication intermittent – check loop wiring, shielding, termination, and HART device address; verify DTM/EDD integration with the control system.
